Tribute to the February 2009 Black Saturday Victorian Bushfires

Saturday this place it saw
The greatest heat wave on record
Melbourne hit 46 degrees
The dragon’s breath roared angrily
The sky it changed to an orange grey
When people say a match was lit to trees

The blaze arrived much too soon
For folk to get out, to get out of their rooms
They would have felt a suffocating heat
So I’m told, the flames they came,
With ember attacks, like pouring rain
From nature’s path there was no retreat

And they’re calling it “Our Darkest Day”
But for those of us who still remain…

We’ll look up to the sky
In courage and in hope
We’ll blink the ash from our eyes
We’ll sure find a way to cope
All the loose change from your pockets
Mate, it helps to pay the bills
‘Cos it’s an awfully big hole to fill
It’s an awfully big hole to fill

Some of us who got away
Have burns and scars that are here to stay
Others, they lost everything they know
In the aftermath we scour the ground
Reclaiming bodies, some will never be found,
From splintered lives, our new seeds we’ll grow

And they’re calling it “Our Darkest Day”
But for those of us who still remain…

We’ll look up to the sky

We’ll sure find a way to cope
